West Ham defender Emerson has called upon himself and his teammates, to change their fortunes with the visit of Southampton on Sunday.

The Italian international has impressed since joining the Hammers, with Moyes turning to him on the left hand side more and more as the season progresses.

After featuring for his country during the international break, all focus has returned to keeping West Ham in the Premier League after a difficult season.

West Ham face fellow relegation threatened side Southampton on Sunday, a win for either team could be vital in determining their fate come the end of the season. Emerson said that he understands that “it is a very important game for both teams” when speaking to WHUFC.com

He admits that his side probably shouldn’t be in the position they are stating that “it is a hard situation because if you look at the team on paper it is a very good team.” After a massive window in the summer, a lot of fans were expecting the team to be taken to the next level but West Ham have gone backwards and now find themselves desperate for three points against the Saints.

Emerson’s mindset seems set on getting nothing less than a win and getting the East London side out of the relegation battle saying “we want these three points… we need to try and win against Southampton as much as possible’ and that the team ‘are confident we can do better,” which is something that has been echoed by everyone at West Ham throughout the season. The players understand they shouldn’t be in the situation they find themselves in.

The defender knows that it’s far from over stating “We have chances to turn it around and we need to take them.”

While there are only 12 games left of the season, it’s far from over. The games are coming thick and fast, the Hammers simply can not afford to drop points to Southampton if they are to stay up. In the words of Emerson “we need to win the game.”
