West Ham are back to their old ways as they secure their place in a second European semi final in a row, with David Moyes reflecting on a big moment for the club.
Last Thursday, West Ham and Gent were equal after full time in the first leg of the quarter final. In a game with all to play for, the hammers managed to bounce back after going a goal down before half time, to win the game in a 5-2 aggregate victory. 2 goals from Michail Antonio, one for captain Declan Rice and a penalty from Lucas Paqueta saw the stadium erupt in a night full of emotion.
An eager David Moyes spoke to West Ham’s Official Website following an amazing night for him and his team. This isn’t the first time Moyes has come this far in Europe, with success last year taking them all the way to the semi’s against Frankfurt.
“You want these big nights, you want to get used to it. Great credit to the players, it really is for them to do this.” he explained. “You know what I’m going to say though – we’ve got to go one stage further this time, so I hope the experience we had for the game last year, the way the game went, we can maybe try to use that.”
Despite the huge win last night, the first leg didn’t show the best performance, and with a goal in the first half of the second leg, panic set in. However, the hammers came out driven and eventually looked to be back in form and came out the better team.
“I felt a big relief because we hadn’t played well in the first game against them, and losing a goal in the first half was terrible and I was thinking, my goodness, this is maybe going against us tonight.” Moyes told whufc.com.
The final will be held in Prague on the 7th June, and David Moyes and the team will be looking forward to getting to Prague. The Czech Republic pair, Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soueck will be hoping to show their fellow team mates their home towns if they are successful at beating AZ Alkmaar. The first leg of the semi final will be held on the 11th May at home, with the second leg on the 18th in the Netherlands.
“We want to be in the final. We’re all looking forward to trying to get to Prague. I’ve got the date in my calendar and my head, so I’m hoping that I can make it happen.”
