Academy graduate Billy Bates has signed his first professional contract with West Ham United.

Following a great season with the U18s, it was announced yesterday that Billy Bates would pen a contract with West Ham. After an impressive season with Norwich, he made the move to our Hammers in 2020. After a tough start to the 2021/22 season, with time out due to an injury, Bates made a great recovery and finished the 2022/23 season with 14 appearances in all competitions, 2 goals & helped his team lift the FA Youth Cup trophy in April.

With six of his team mates signing professional contracts with the club, Bates will join Ollie Scarles, Callum Marshall, Lewis Orford, Gideon Kodua and Ryan Battrum to cap off their successful season with this amazing opportunity.

Manager Kenny Brown was delighted to offer the centre-back this opportunity, and Bates spoke to West Ham’s website on how much it means to him.

“I’m over the moon to sign my professional contract,” he told whufc.com. “I can’t believe it to be honest. I’m absolutely buzzing. It means that I’ve been rewarded for all the hard work that I’ve put in.”

“I’m buzzing for myself and for my family. My family were all in shock, but they were so happy for me at the same time. It was a great moment for everyone.”

After joining in 2020, Bates made 3 appearances for his first season in claret and blue, however an ACL injury saw the youngster miss the whole of the 2021/22 season. But making a big return for his side against Aston Villa in September 2022, he scored a goal in the teams 6-3 win.

“Obviously I’ve come back from a big injury this season and, as we go into the new season, I’m really hopeful of a year with no injuries. Then I’ll have the opportunity to show what I’m about.” he added.

“For me, I just want to take any opportunities that I get with both hands. I want to show everyone at this Football Club what I am capable of.”

Kenny Brown also spoke proudly to West Ham following the big news, as he reflects on Bates’ time at the East London club so far.

“I know I speak on behalf of everyone in the Academy of Football when I say how delighted we are to see Billy sign his professional deal with West Ham United,” Brown said.

“Billy has endured a difficult journey in his young career so far, due a couple of significant injuries, but I have been impressed with his resolve, willpower and attitude in overcoming these setbacks to once again represent our Club.

“The reaction from his teammates and coaches when Billy scored on his return from injury in September [against Aston Villa] shows just how popular a member of the U18s squad he is. I sincerely hope Billy can now kick-on and enjoy a productive career in Claret and Blue.”

Everyone at The West Ham Way congratulates Billy and wishes him all the success in his career.
