Following his impressive European form, Alphonse Areola is maybe set to finally become West Ham’s first choice keeper.

Areola has had limited chances in the Premier League since joining the Hammers, but his impressive form in Europe has been enough for him to switch roles with Fabianski and, more than likely, becoming our main man between the sticks.

Having only had 5 appearances in the league this season, while Fabianski was out injured. Many had expected him to become first choice when he joined or at the very least last season but Fabianski did still have a good season, despite his age, and managed to keep Alphonse out the side.

The France international managed 6 clean sheets in the Conference League and he only conceded more than once on just one occasion. He’s been vital to our European success over the last two years, he has pulled off some amazing saves, like the one against Sevilla, and without him we might not be celebrating winning the trophy.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Areola performs in the big European matches as he has so much experience at winning trophies throughout his career, but winning one with a club like West Ham really is special for him. “These are moments that will never be forgotten,” he told the official site. “I’ve been privileged to have won many things, and this is another trophy, it will have pride of place at West Ham’s home. We will savour this moment with our families.”

Overall, the shot-stopper has been excellent when called upon and, as well as deserving a chance in the Prem, it’s about time Fabianski had a break. The former Polish international has had a long career and he has been absolutely sensational for us. It’s a fitting time for him to pass the baton to his fellow goalkeeper and I’m sure he will be there to support him every step of the way.

In the meantime, Areola and the rest of the squad will enjoy a well deserved holiday to celebrate their achievements. “We have made history,” he exclaimed, “we’re delighted and so proud to be a part of West Ham’s history.” While it may not be him in goal for it, he helped the Hammers to another season of European adventures and, more importantly, our first major trophy since 1980. As he rightfully said, he’s a part of West Ham history now.
