Rehanne Skinner could not help but feel disappointed with West Ham’s result against Everton, but believes there are positives to take from the performance.
As the WSL season approaches the halfway point, West Ham find themselves bottom of the league with only one win to their name. It seems pretty bleak for the Hammers but they’re far from being out for the count.
However, a positive result against Everton felt like a must but, despite their best efforts, they just could not find a goal. In a game where they deserved all three points, they walked away with none. Manager Rehanne Skinner agreed that her side were unlucky not to win the game.
“In terms of the stats and everything associated with the game, we’ll come out on top because we dominated the game from start to finish,” she explained to WHUFC.com. “We’ve been caught out a little bit by over playing at the back and conceded a corner which then led to a goal at the back post.”
“The difficulty is that we’ve created chances, and we’ve just not kind of taken them with enough conviction, they’ve been just off target, or they’ve gotten a little bit too close to the keeper. Our keeper made no saves in the game and that kind of shows the dominance that we’ve had within the game itself.”
Since joining the club, results haven’t gone Skinner’s way but given that the performances have been overall pretty strong, it can only be a matter of time before everything clicks into place.
“The players 100% believe in what we’re doing,” the gaffer continued, “and the way that we’re playing because they know that they’re playing better football than they have played previously, and they’re comfortable with what we’re trying to achieve.”
“When you look at the way that we’re moving the ball and the way that we’re progressing, in terms of how West Ham want to play as a Club, we’re moving the ball really well and the fans are getting behind us with that, and they can see the difference in our attacking play.”
“We’ve definitely had our chances and I think that once we get one of those, it’ll be a situation where we’ll score more and more. Sometimes in football, it’s just getting that one over the line, that obviously then sets the wheels in motion a little bit better. The players are confident but it’s just not working out at this moment in time. We’re going to keep working incredibly hard for the Club and for the fans. The results aren’t good enough right now, we know that but we’re playing in a way that we believe is going to help us in the future.”
Fortunately, our Irons have a brilliant opportunity to get themselves out of the relegation zone on Sunday with a trip to Leicester, they just need the pieces to come together and finish their chances.
Luck has not been on their side but there is no doubt the team has the ability to turn this season around and start stringing together some results.
