West Ham have shown interest in signing Torino defender Allesandro Buongiorni in January, according to reports.
There are a number of areas that David Moyes is keen to add to in January. A striker is the top priority, but a defender comes shortly after. He would like to sign a full-back but having a player that can do it all defensively could represent better value for money.
Someone who has that versatility is Italian defender Buongiorni. He’s someone who can play anywhere along the defence, someone who has become crucial to Torino after the last few seasons and this has attracted the interest of West Ham, according to Roma Metropolitan Magazine.
The Italian side have started to find consistency in Serie A following a couple of worrying years and that improvement in the league coincides with when Buongiorni started playing more consistently.
However, West Ham won’t get his signature without a challenge. The likes of Aston Villa who look to continue their title charge, Tottenham who want to secure top 4, and Chelsea who desperately need to turn this season round have all shown interest in acquiring his services.
Torino are asking €30 million for their star, which is almost definitely too much for the Irons this January due to being on a limited budget thanks to concerns over breaking FFP. If they are wanting to sign Buongiorni, they will have to hope he stays in Turin until the Summer.
It would be a risk signing him for that price, but if he can make the step up to the Premier League, it could end up being a bargain. Unfortunately, it’s highly unlikely we will see our Irons take that risk this January.
