Chelsea are set to charge a higher fee than expected for Ian Maatsen amidst West Ham interest, according to reports.
One of West Ham’s more shrewd signings in recent years has been Emerson Palmieri. The Italian full-back was easily the Hammers best player in the Conference League final, and this season he has been so good that fans have started to dub him ‘Mr Consistent’.
Astonishingly, Chelsea let him go for just £13 million so, when it comes to looking for backup/competition for Emerson, where better to look than in West London again.
This time, the Irons are looking to sign Ian Maatsen again after a failed attempt in the Summer, our own ExWHUEmployee has revealed. He initially rejected a move as he wanted to fight for his place in the Chelsea starting XI, but has since gone on to play under 200 minutes in the Premier League this season. It appears that Maatsen is now keen on a move away from the Blues in order to fulfil his incredibly high potential.
Reports initially suggested that he would be available for around £20 million, which would suit David Moyes’ limited budget but now they are charging significantly more, Ben Jacobs has reported.
Apparently, Chelsea want £31.5 million for the 21 year old which could prove difficult given that there are other areas that the Hammers want to improve on. Given that they have their own financial issues though, and an extremely large squad, Jacobs believes that they are eager to offload him.
Depending on how desperate Chelsea get, West ham may be able to get him for cheaper, but with rumoured interest from Borussia Dortmund this seems unlikely.
There is no doubt that Maatsen is a brilliant talent with a bright future ahead of him and, under normal circumstances, the board would probably consider paying around £30 million for a player of his quality. If the money becomes available, or they can get him for a cheaper price, then it is very possible we will see him wear Claret and Blue, but that is a big if at this stage.
