West Ham reportedly want to sign an Essex-born League One defender this January, but are set to face challenges from other Premier League teams.

It has become more and more apparent in recent weeks that West Ham need to sign a centre-back as soon as possible. Illness, injuries and AFCON have left the Hammers with just two first team defenders on a number of occasions and, considering that Mavropanos went off injured today, that could be the case again.

With only an injury prone Zouma and a 35-year-old Ogbonna left standing, it could mean they have to sign a defender as a matter of urgency.

Fortunately, David Moyes and his team have been looking at potential replacements for Aguerd in the event that he leaves this window, one of those being Ronnie Edwards, the Daily Mail have reported.

Edwards is a 20-year-old who plays for League One side Peterborough. His stats have been impressive to say the least and he has been key to their push for promotion this season. Arguably his best attribute is passing, with him being great on the ball in general. This could make him the ideal replacement for Aguerd who, on his day, is a phenomenal ball-playing defender.

However, while he is a young, promising, homegrown, local-boy – there are a few potential concerns when it comes to signing him. The first of which being the competition that the Irons are expected to face.  Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are both expected to try to sign him, leaving the Harlow-born with a choice at where he thinks he is best to continue his career.

Secondly, a big concern for Moyes would be his height. While not overly short, he is only 5’10 which is far below the Scotsman’s usual requirements. This lack of an aerial presence could mean he favours other options.

Finally, there is the obvious point that he has no experience playing at the highest level. Considering that they need someone they can rely upon and play consistently. The club have to be certain he is ready to take that step up to the Premier League.

Signing Edwards would be a risk but, given that he would be extremely cheap, it certainly is one that will be worth taking. A player that has the characteristics to make the leap does not always do so, but with no risk comes no reward and with his potential the rewards could be bountiful.
