According to reports, David Moyes is not actually a huge fan of one of West Ham’s top January transfer targets.
Understandably, West Ham are desperate to bring in some new additions this month. They are on track to secure a fourth consecutive season of European football but recent injuries have made it clear they can improve their squad.
With Said Benrahma likely to depart this month, signing a left winger has become one of the club’s top priorities. A number of players have been linked with a move to the Hammers including the likes of Jack Clarke and Jonathan Rowe, but one player in particular has been consistently named as a priority signing.
Steven Bergwijn has really found his feet at Ajax following a spell at Tottenham. In fact, he actually did pretty good for Spurs as well, it was just always going to be difficult for him to get minutes when he had Harry Kane and Son ahead of him. The Daily Mail have reported that the Hammers are still planning on making a move for the winger, but there is one big issue.
Surprisingly, they believe that David Moyes is not actually that keen on the Dutchman. This comes as a massive surprise considering that the board have taken a backseat on transfers in recent years. It may be a case that Tim Steidten is pushing for a deal.
It raises the question though, if Moyes does not want him, what would be the point in signing him? Obviously Steidten’s work is incredibly important but Moyes is the one who picks the team, he is the one who should have the final decision on transfers.
Our Irons’ extremely limited budget this window means that all funds need to be spent carefully. Given how important he is for Ajax, it is hard to imagine that Bergwijn would come particularly cheap, so why waste precious funds on someone that Moyes does not wish to sign?
