West Ham were again the receiving end of shocking officiating at the weekend, which cost David Moyes’ side 2 valuable points.

It was another day of controversy surrounding the much talked-about VAR, which again came into the fray with the inconsitency and bizarre calls which appear to dominate much of the conversations surrounding the game these days.

Moyes’ Hammers, albeit not at their best for the trip to Sheffield United, dug in and appeared to be heading home with all 3 points from Bramall Lane, until the referee and VAR called for a penalty to the hosts due to a foul from Areola.

However it was clear from the replay that in fact McBernie had elbowed the goalkeeper, and therefore the spot kick should never have been awarded.

The spot kick was converted but then seconds later, a clear foul on Bowen in the box at the other end was not given – in fact the referee bizarrely called for a foul the other way – with VAR nowhere to be seen when it was needed to overturn the call.

The shocking late drama and poor officiating lead to West Ham taking just a point away from the bottom of the table side, with our ExWHUEmployee sharing his frustration with the calls.

“I’ve just got home and I am so frustrated with yet another match dominated by the ref,” said our club insider.

“Both penalty decisions are wrong and not to mention everything else the ref called wrong too. I don’t get how the standard of reffing appears worse now with VAR than it’s ever been before!

“Would like to shout out Cornet on his first goal for the club and Danny Ings who I thought did really well today. Impressive cameo in midfield from Ben Johnson too.”
