West Ham are unlikely to sign Victor Boniface this January, but not for the reason you might think.

Despite their desperate need for a striker, fans were shocked when reports emerged about a potential deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface.

The Nigerian striker has been crucial to the German side’s title charge after he joined from Union Saint-Gilloise in the Summer. In all competitions, he has had 24 goal involvements in 23 games.

This incredible record has sparked interest from across Europe but it was a surprise to see that West Ham were apparently willing to break their record transfer fee to sign him. After all, the Hammers are meant to be on an extremely limited budget due to FFP. However, Football Insider have now reported that he will not be coming to East London this month, but it is nothing to do with finances.

Apparently, it is down to the fact he has a groin injury which will see him sidelined for another few months. This is not a new issue though, and therefore it makes you question where these links came from in the first place. On top of this, it is extremely unlikely Leverkusen would sell such a key player when they are trying to win their first Bundesliga title.

Whether he is someone our Irons move for in the Summer remains to be seen, but the fact of the matter is it would take a miracle for him to join this month. As much as we would all like to see him wearing claret and blue, it just will not happen in the next couple of weeks.
