West Ham have made an excellent signing in Kalvin Phillips, according to Podcast host Dave Walker.
Our Hammers secured the loan for the England midfielder from champions Manchester City for the remainder of the season, with the hope being it will be made permanent this summer should it be a successful stint in east London.
The player himself was delighted to get the deal done, and couldn’t contain his excitment in joining the club – whilst admitting he’s kept a close eye on West Ham over the years.
“I’ve spoken to Dec quite a bit about West Ham over time, and he’s always said amazing things,” Phillips told the clubs Podcast ‘Iron Cast’. “I also get on well with Jarrod, Ingsy and Prowsey – I’ve not had chance to speak to them yet, but I’ll look forward to seeing them in training!
“I’ve watched a lot of West Ham over the years, I saw the celebrations from Prague last summer and I’ve played at London Stadium several times, so I know the quality of the environment I’m coming into.
“You look at players like Lucas Paquetá and Mohammed Kudus, and the whole squad in truth, and it’s not hard to get excited.”
Phillips hopes he can emulate the successes of Jesse Lingard on his loan spell in east London back in 2021, with the former Leeds captain a player with a point to prove with Euro 2024 on the horizon.
“Jesse did brilliantly when he was here, and Jarrod and Tomáš are huge for the Club now, so they’re not easy acts to follow but I’ll do my best,” added Phillips.
“I’m delighted to get it over the dotted line. I was over in Abu Dhabi on a warm-weather training camp with City, and all I could think about was getting the loan sorted.”
The West Ham Way Podcast co-host Walker was understandably thrilled with the signing, and believes his experience and leadership are something that us fans can look forward to seeing for the rest of the season.
“Phillips is a fantastic signing for us,” said Walker. “A quality player with good character and strong leadership skills. It’s not often we sign an England international on loan so let’s enjoy him and hope we can make it permanent in the summer!”
