A journalist has made a surprising claim that a West Ham outcast could be key to the remainder of their season.

West Ham had a brilliant opportunity to achieve a fourth consecutive season of European football ahead of the January transfer window. All they needed to do was offload some of the dead wood in their squad and bring in some replacements.

Unfortunately, the Hammers completely failed at this. Aside from signing Kalvin Phillips on loan, they made no additions to their squad while offloading the likes of Pablo Fornals, Said Benrahma and Thilo Kehrer. While these players were the sort of individuals the club would want to move on, there was no point letting them all go without a replacement.

Surprisingly though, the answer to David Moyes’ problems may already be at the club, with journalist Paul Brown believing that Maxwel Cornet could be ready to prove himself in East London.

“He is going to get chances now because their squad is quite thin,” Brown explained to GIVEMESPORT. “There will have to be some rotation in forward areas and, if he can find some form, he has got every chance of forcing his way in there on a more regular basis.”

“When all of that is taken together, I think it should light a fire under Maxwel Cornet and hopefully bring the best out of him.”

The Ivorian has not had an easy ride since joining from Burnley in the Summer of 2022. Just as he was hitting form, he suffered a horrific injury which kept him sidelined for a number of months. Since returning he has struggled for minutes and only scored his first goal for the Irons a few weeks back against Sheffield United.

If the club are able to get the best out of Cornet, it could be like a new signing in itself. As Brown said, he simply has to get minutes before the end of the season and, therefore, we might finally get to see the player we thought we had signed.
