Jeff Stelling makes yet another baffling dog at those West Ham fans who want David Moyes to be sacked.

Outside of West Ham fans themselves, no one seems to understand why David Moyes is such a controversial man in East London. It is understandable, after all the Hammers have just won their first major trophy since 1980 and sit 9th in the Premier League.

Disappointingly, if you are looking at things at a surface level you will never see the reality of a situation. The truth is that West Ham have played awful football for a while now and their form in 2024 gives an idea of what things really are like.

TalkSPORT’s Jeff Stelling is one of a large majority of pundits who seem to think that supporters are ungrateful for demanding more from their team, as well as wanting to watch somewhat attractive football. In the past, he had gone as far as telling Hammers fans to “pull yourself together.”

Unfortunately, the woeful form this year has done little to change his mind as he continued to criticise those who are calling for the Scotsman to be sacked.

“What a catastrophe,” Stelling began ranting. “You’re a West Ham fan, where do you want to be? What would you rather have? Would you rather have your side playing free-flowing, fluid football and struggling for survival in the Premier League, or be where you are now: top half of the table, still in Europe, you’re European winners.”

For someone as experienced, knowledgeable and tuned in as Stelling it is surprising that he does not understand that you can be successful and play attractive football at the same time – plenty of teams do it. As much as football is a results based business, it is also one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world. Why should fans have to tolerate watching their team play on the back foot for 90 minutes?

Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinions and there is no objectivity on the Moyes debate, but it is just a bewildering comment to make when not a single other team in the top half of the Premier League plays as poorly as we do at this moment in time.

If it was not for our good start to the season, we would probably be in serious trouble at the other end of the table. Thankfully there is still an opportunity to make this a successful season but there are serious doubts whether Moyes has it in his locker to turn things around.
