West Ham are set to battle London rivals for the signature of a highly rated left-back in the Summer transfer window.
Signing Emerson Palmieri for just £13 million may be one of the biggest bargains in football. The Italian defender has been phenomenal this season, and was by far the best player on the pitch in last year’s Conference League final.
Unfortunately though, he is still human and no player can start every single game across four different competitions for very long. With it looking like Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson could both be departing in the Summer, the Hammers are already said to be looking at signing backup to the left-back. According to The Guardian, West Ham are interested in signing Gent’s Archie Brown to provide that competition.
The 21-year-old has had an extremely impressive season, playing 18 games and providing 2 assists so far. Standing at an impressive 6’3, Brown’s most effective when going forward given that he used to be a winger. On top his excellent attacking attributes, he also would help the be East London side to fulfil their homegrown quota.
While he is only expected to cost £15 million, the Irons may struggle to secure his signature as a number of clubs are expected to make a bid for him, such as Chelsea, Lyon, Nice, AC Milan and Juventus. Chelsea in particular have more money than sense and may just be willing to bid more than anyone else in order to sign him.
However, as we all know, Tim Steidten’s ‘sale pitch’ has sold the idea of West Ham to the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez, so there is no reason he would not be able to do the same with Brown. £15 million is not a huge risk, but when we paid less than that for Emerson you have to question whether he would represent the best value for money.
