Kalvin Phillips, who is on loan at West Ham from Manchester City, has been linked with a return to boyhood club Leeds United this summer.

Phillips made the switch to East London in the January transfer window, joining the Hammers on loan for the remainder of the season. Since joining Manchester City in the summer of 2022, Phillips has only made six starts for Pep Guardiola’s side, and it was hoped his loan move to West Ham would help him get some regular game time under his belt and find some form ahead of the Euro’s this summer.

So far, unfortunately for the England international, he has struggled in a West Ham shirt and has failed to impress, making errors leading to goals in multiple games and even being sent off against Nottingham Forest after receiving two quick bookings.

It is being reported today in both the Mirror and the Sun, that should Leeds United be promoted to the Premier League, they would be interested in potentially re-signing Kalvin Phillips. His current £150,000 per week wages at Man City could certainly prove to be a stumbling block, and Phillips would need to take a major pay cut in order to return to his boyhood club.

West Ham do not have an option to make Phillips’ loan deal a permanent one this summer. Manchester City are believed to still be interested in a summer move for Hammers midfielder Lucas Paqueta, it is thought that City would look to use Phillips as a potential makeweight in an attempt to get a deal for Paqueta over the line and in order to bring the Hammers asking price down.

Where Phillips’ future lies remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain, the England midfielder currently finds himself in a difficult chapter of his career. If a deal can be done, a summer return to boyhood club Leeds United may be the best move for all parties and give Phillips the opportunity to re ignite his career, enjoy his football once more and get regular game time under his belt having not played regularly for almost two years.
