Aaron Cresswell wants West Ham to take momentum from “deserved” win against Wolves into their Europa League quarter-final.
No matter how bad they’ve performed, no matter what form they’ve been in, David Moyes’ West Ham always find a way to win the most important games. Anything but three points against Wolves could have made it extremely difficult for the Hammers to get European football again but, thanks to a brilliant second-half display, they delivered.
At the time, many fans were left baffled by the choice to replace the injured Jarrod Bowen with Aaron Cresswell, however it was this decision that changed the game. Based on the second 45, the defender believes that his side deserved to walk away with a win.
“It was night and day in the second period, though. We kept the ball and were a threat going forward, we got the goals and we could have had another,” Cresswell told WHUFC.com.
“I’m not sure what happened with the decision for Wolves’ overturned goal at the end. I couldn’t tell on the pitch, but thankfully it went our way. We’ve had a few that have gone against us recently, so we were pleased with the decision, and overall I think we deserved the win.”
At half-time the Hammers found themselves 1-0 down through a Sarabia penalty, but found themselves level through a spot kick of their own. Towards the closing stages of the match, Ward-Prowse miraculously scores directly from a corner and Cresswell can’t decide whether it was intentional.
“I don’t know if he [Ward-Prowse] meant it, but his delivery is amazing and his ability from set-pieces is amazing,” Cresswell stated. “Thankfully it went in, and it was a really good moment.”
“We want to take momentum from today into Thursday now. We know it’s going to be really tough there, but we’re ready for it.”
“We’ve got a few really important weeks coming up, and we’ve got to stay positive. We’re still in the hunt for success in the Premier League and in Europe, and we’re going to do the best we can in every game.”
Unlike last year, West Ham can’t afford to sacrifice the league in favour of the European competition. Instead, they must give their absolute all in every single game between now and the end of the season if they are to make this a memorable campaign. If they are unable to win the Europa League then they simply must finish in a European place, something that is much easier said than done.
