West Ham are reportedly leading the race to sign a highly-rated Championship centre-back.
Despite playing a defensive style of football, West Ham have the worst defence outside of the bottom 3. Somehow, their attack has outweighed this and they are still in a great position. However, there is no denying that individually there is a lot of concern over the back line. Kurt Zouma’s knee injuries are catching up on him, Nayef Aguerd has never adapted to the Premier League and Angelo Ogbonna is near the end of his career.
Understandably, the centre-backs are an area that the club are keen to improve on in the Summer, with at least 2 new additions needed. With their need to fulfil the homegrown quota, they are having to look at their options domestically, ideally plucking a bargain from the Championship.
According to Football Insider one such target is Hull’s Jacob Greaves. The 23-year-old has been a crucial player to the Tigers over the past 4 seasons, playing in the majority of their games. As of late, he has worn the captain’s armband – an impressive feat for someone that young.
He possesses great passing, brilliant tackling, decent pace and, even though he is only 6’ tall, he is excellent in the air.
In order to secure his signature, West Ham will have to pay around £15 million. Obviously signing any player from the Championship is a risk, but for that price the potential losses are nothing. If he is able to make the step up successfully and replicate his performances from the EFL, the Irons could have an absolute steal on their hands for that price.
