West Ham fans will be overjoyed as a detested managerial target could be set to join another club.

In a way, you’ve got to feel a bit sorry for Julen Lopetegui. Every time he has been linked with a club, the fans rebel as they don’t see him as good enough appointment.

From a West Ham perspective it isn’t necessarily about how he is as a manager, it would be an uninspiring appointment but not an awful one, but it’s more about how it’s the easy and cheap option that shows a lack of ambition as well as a lack of care from the board.

His career consists of failing at Real Madrid, doing a good job at Sevilla until he led them to a 16th place finish, and barely getting a look in at Wolves before he walked away. Essentially, he is not the sort of manager that will push West Ham on to the next level, nor is he the type that will be able to get AC Milan contending for titles again – yet he’s been heavily linked with a move to both clubs.

Understandably, the Italian side’s fans have been furious with the fact he has been considered for the job. In fact, he is said to have come close to joining before fans started a petition against him. However, TEAMtalk reports that this may not have fully put Milan off of the Spaniard and they could still appoint him in spite of the rebellion.

This could end up being brilliant for the Hammers as it may force the board to bring in someone like Ruben Amorim (who is Steidten, Noble and many others first choice) in. The best managers aren’t going to be without a job, so why should West Ham fans have to settle just because the board won’t pay compensation, yet they’d be more than happy to pay the same price on a squad player?
