West Ham have agreed an extension to the contract of Aaron Cresswell, with the player set to work in the squad for long-term admirer Julen Lopetegui.

The veteran left-back, who will be commencing his 10th season in east London this year, is seen as a big and experienced character within the dressing room, and one that will help oversee a huge transition over the months ahead.

The left-back, who is a one-time Hammer of the Year and Players Player of the Year, is regarded as someone who also helps with the younger Academy players in making the step up.

Cresswell, although being in now the latter years of his career, has been reliable when called upon this season, and is likely to resume a squad role under the incoming Head Coach Lopetegui – who is to be confirmed in his new role this Thursday by the club.

Our Podcast co-host ExWHUEmployee has provided his view on the new deal for Cresswell, with the insider believing his experience could prove pivotal for such an important period for the club.

“I agree with the decision to keep Cresswell on for a year,” stated Ex. “We need home grown players, popular players and players who can come in and do a job for us.

“He has been a great servant to the club and it’s important to have people like that to help the new manager. He tried to sign him for wolves so obviously values him as a player and I think he will be an important squad member next year.

“When you think of our top left backs of all time he has to be right up there with only maybe Julian Dicks and Frank Lampard snr ahead.

“10 years service at PL level in modern football is an impressive accolade for a very popular player!”
