West Ham could reignite their interest in English centre-back this Summer.
Factually, this season’s defence is the worst West Ham have had in the Premier League era. Despite finishing 9th, they conceded more goals than they did under Avram Grant. Considering we’ve got an unbelievable goalkeeper and two solid fullbacks, that means it’s purely down to a lack of quality in the centre of defence that they’ve had such a poor defensive record.
Fortunately, this is an issue the club clearly want to address as soon as possible with a number of options being considered, including Brazilian centre-back Fabrizio Bruno, but with their need to fulfil the homegrown quota, they may need to look a little closer to home to find their next defender.
Trevor Chalobah is someone who’s been linked with a move to the London Stadium for a while now. Due to a high price tag though, nothing had materialised. However, Chelsea may now be more realistic in their demands and that may respark the Hammers interest according to Football Insider.
Despite the Blues having a lacklustre season, Chalobah was never really called upon making only 17 appearances across all competitions. The 24-year-old is certainly someone they’ll be looking to sell to help balance the books.
Unfortunately for West Ham, a whole host of Premier League and European teams are interested in signing him, such as Nottingham Forest and Fulham.
The defender has had a couple of issues with injuries this season, and that’s certainly something that clubs will need to take into consideration when weighing up a move. Ultimately though, he’s an experienced, homegrown 24-year-old defender who still has plenty of room to improve. If he can find his form again, then he could be a brilliant signing for our Irons.
