Friend of The West Ham Way and West Ham legend Julian Dicks made a return to football this week with his appointment as manager of Heybridge Swifts.

He has also named another former hammer Adrian Whitbread as his assistant. We caught up with Julian to talk about the latest chapter in his colorful career.

Julian, welcome back to management – How happy are you to be back in the dugout?

Thank you, yes, I’m happy to be back in management, especially with Heybridge, it’s a club I already know having previously managed here, a great club with great supporters, fantastic people behind-the-scenes, so I’m looking forward to it very much.

What are your ambitions for the club?

My ambitions are to get promoted automatically, can it happen? Of course it can. Will it happen? I don’t know there’s a lot of factors that need to be brought into this., The players have to work extremely hard. You need to be free for injuries and you need a bit of luck. But my ambitions are always the same. I want to win every single game and I know it’s not possible, but that’s my ambition.

They are to stabilise the club financially this season, as it is important to keep the club in the community, and long-term to go as possibly as high as we can through the leagues. I believe every club every manager and every player should think the same, again I know it’s not always possible but they are my ambitions.

What are the finances and budget like?

They are reduced from previous years due to a couple of factors – but we have turned a corner and are hoping to build back up this year, and kick on.

We have 3G pitch that we can rent on a regular basis for different events etc that soon will generate more income for the club. We are looking for sponsors and investors that want to be part of rebuilding this club, uniting a community and being part of an exciting new chapter for the club. Whether this is through player/ staff sponsorship, advertisement etc. If anybody wants to sponsor me, they’re more than welcome. I don’t come cheap!

If you would like to help sponsor or advertise with Heybridge please get in touch with us at thewesthamway@gmail.com and we can pass on your details to the club!

We intend to support Julian as much as we can and will give you updates on how Heybridge are getting on.
