Julen Lopetegui’s top centre-back target will set West Ham back a staggering £40 million.

Obviously, West Ham’s squad needs a massive overhaul but no other position is more important than the two centre-backs. Without a doubt, their leaky defence is what cost them this season as they conceded an embarrassing 74 goals in the Premier League alone – the most in their history.

Unfortunately their first attempt at signing a defender seems to have failed as Fabricio Bruno’s demands have gone up massively. However, the Hammers are reportedly looking to move on to the next target already.

Max Kilman is someone that has been on West Ham’s radar for a while now but they have previously been priced out of a move. With a bigger budget this Summer though, they could look to come back in for the Wolves captain, but he won’t come cheap.

According to Football Insider, the Midlands side are set to demand a massive £40 million for their skipper. Obviously, this is a staggering amount of money, and a substantial percentage of the Hammers’ budget, however for a proven, English, Premier League player it’s probably about right in today’s market.

Our Irons are in desperate need of a central defender and are equally as desperate for homegrown players. Kilman is someone who has played under Lopetegui before, is a quality defender and clearly has leadership qualities – if you’re going to spend £40 million on a defender it should definitely be him.
