West Ham have reportedly entered the race to sign a sought after English defender on a free transfer this Summer.

After conceding the most goals they ever have in a Premier League season, it’s no surprise that West Ham are desperately trying to improve upon their defence this season. They need a complete overhaul of central defenders and, due to the homegrown quota, they could do with the new additions being English.

Unfortunately, signing Premier League level, homegrown centre-backs is not a cheap thing to do. Thankfully, there are some more cost effective options which may appeal to the Hammers.

According to Chronicle Live, West Ham have entered the race to sign Lloyd Kelly on a free contract. The Bournemouth defender has been a key player for the Cherries since joining back in 2019.

Alongside the Irons, Newcastle are also very keen on securing his services as they also look to secure European football next season.

However, signing Kelly doesn’t come without its issue despite being available for free. Most notably, he has a horrific injury record causing him to only play 23 Premier League games last season and the same amount the season before. What West Ham need is consistency at the back but it’s impossible to get that from someone who only plays every other game.
