West Ham could lose out on their top midfield target to a French club according to their club insider.

With Edson Alvarez being forced off injured for Mexico in their opening game of Copa America, West Ham have been forced to speed up their search for a midfielder.

While a number of players are being considered, the Hammers’ top target was said to be Ismael Kone. The central midfielder has enjoyed an impressive season for Watford since signing from Montreal. Across 42 Championship games, he managed 7 goal involvements and has been absolutely pivotal to the way the Hornets play.

The 22-year-old is currently being watched at the Copa America where he’s representing Canada and he’s clearly impressed enough to warrant interest. Unfortunately for West Ham, they may be too late to the party as there is now an agreement between Watford and Olympique de Marseille for him to join the French side, LaMinuteOM reports.

Obviously it’s not the end of the world, but it is frustrating that our Irons didn’t even get a chance to convince him before he decided on his future.

Thankfully the recruitment team have other avenues to pursue and, more importantly, reports from Mexico suggest Alvarez’s injury isn’t as bad as first feared. That said, the Hammers have certainly lost out on an exciting young man who could go on to have a very bright future.
