West Ham are reportedly one of 5 Premier League clubs interested in signing a £30 million midfielder.

The news about Flamengo trying to sign Lucas Paqueta has only made his future at West Ham even more uncertain. While the club is unlikely to accept a loan offer, if the Brazilian club somehow finds the money to put in a substantial offer then there’s every chance he could go.

If that happens, then the Hammers will obviously need to sign a new creative midfielder. Fortunately, they’ve been tracking some for a while now as they once expected Paqueta to move to Manchester City this Summer.

Since well before the window opened, West Ham have been consistently linked with a move for Celtic’s Matt O’Riley. The midfielder had a historic season in the Scottish Premiership, managing to be involved in 31 goals.

According to HITC, Southampton are the closest to securing his signature but their bid of £20 million has been rejected as the Hoops are holding out for £30 million. Alongside The Hammers and Saints, Fulham, Everton and Brentford are also showing keen interest.

Unfortunately, our Irons haven’t always been the best at acting fast and it seems unlikely they’d make a move without knowing about Paqueta’s future as other positions require more immediate attention. If he was to replace the Brazilian, the 23-year-old would have big boots to fill but there’s no reason to believe he couldn’t do just that.
