Julen Lopetegui will look to appoint a new captain ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season with a surprising player leading the race.

Before the last campaign, Kurt Zouma had been an unbelievable signing for West Ham. His defensive presence was almost always felt and he put in some sensational performances. Unfortunately, his repeated knee injuries clearly had a massive effect on his mobility and overall game last season however, it was perhaps the pressure of being a captain that got to him the most.

When he was appointed as Declan Rice’s successor by David Moyes many were left surprised as he didn’t seem to have many of the qualities required of a captain and, disappointingly, it seems like the fans were right. A lack of leadership was one of the main reasons the Hammers were so disappointing last season and, with a new manager at the wheel, it seems like the centre-backs captaincy is coming to an end.

Obviously, this leaves fans with one massive question: who will be the next skipper? With Max Kilman having his medical with the club over the past few days, many have suspected that he could be given the armband straight away. Although this is a real possibility, there are other contenders.

According to a report from The Athletic, Jarrod Bowen is actually one of the players leading the race. If you hear him speak off the pitch, he seems like a fairly reserved person but on the pitch you can see how he’s constantly demanding more from his teammates, communicating with and encouraging them. He’s extremely popular in the dressing room and clearly has the respect of all the players – just listen to how Mohammed Kudus speaks about him.

It’s fair to say that Bowen has the qualities that would make a great captain. Individuals like Edson Alvarez and Tomas Soucek will most likely be considered too but, if you held a vote, the Englishman would probably be the fan favourite to lead this team.
