Lucas Paqueta and his Brazil teammates hopes of going all the way in this year’s Copa America tournament were brought to a bitter end as they were defeated by Uruguay in the quarter finals.

Going into this year’s competition, Brazil was regarded as one of the favourites and certainly had high hopes of going on to win a tenth Copa America.

Hammers star Paqueta and his teammates had plenty of the ball, enjoying around 60% possession in the tie, despite this however, they were unable to find a goal or a breakthrough. Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay side played the last 15 minutes or so of the 90 minutes with ten men following the sending off of Nahitan Nandez.

Paqueta was substituted 81 minutes in with Douglas Luiz replacing the Hammers midfielder. As both sides struggled to create clear cut chances and find a goal, the match went straight to a penalty shootout.

Ultimately, it would be Bielsa’s Uruguay side who would come out victorious from the penalty shootout. Unfortunately for Brazil, both Douglas Luiz and Eder Militao missed from 12 yards meaning Uruguay won the shootout 4-2.

For West Ham midfielder Paqueta, his 2024 Copa America tournament concludes with him having reached over 50 caps for his nation. Winners of the tie, Uruguay, will now face off against Colombia in the tournaments semi final which is due to be played in Charlotte, North Carolina.
