Flamengo are determined to sign Lucas Paqueta despite being aware that a loan deal is not an option.
As soon at Lucas Paqueta stepped onto the pitch at the London Stadium everyone knew that he’d constantly be a name on everyone’s lips. Unfortunately, it’s largely not been for the reasons fans would have hoped.
Just how special of a player he is has been overshadowed by the constant talk of his alleged involvement in a betting scandal. The FA’s announcement of an investigation last Summer stopped a big money move to Manchester City, and the surprising decision to charge him did the same a year later.
As a result, the Hammer’s finances for this Summer have had to be completely changed as the transfer budget was determined under the assumption that the Brazilian would be sold for £85 million.
However, there is a potential lifeline in the form of his former club Flamengo. The Serie A side initially wanted to loan him, but West Ham quickly shut down any chance of that. According to Globo, it seems like the club are willing to do whatever it takes to bring him back to his home country and are trying to get a permanent deal done as soon as possible.
From a West Ham perspective, it would make a lot of sense to offload a player that could be banned in the coming months but, from Flamengo’s point of view, it’s a bit bizarre considering they’d have to absolutely obliterate their record transfer in order to sign him when, if he does get found guilty, he would almost certainly get a worldwide ban.
At this point in time, it is hard to imagine them being able to cough up the money they’d need to. West Ham certainly wouldn’t sell him for a loss and that means we will probably see Paqueta wearing claret and blue once again.
