West Ham Ham have been told to pay £15m for Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez, according to a report in the Mirror.
Both West Ham and Brighton & Hove Albion have both been told by David Beckham and co that it will take £15m to sign the 21-year-old Paraguayan midfielder. The Seagulls reportedly had a £7m offer rejected earlier in the window, which fell significantly short of the Miami side’s original £20m valuation. However, they now seem to have lowered their valuation for the midfielder to £15m.
The Paraguayan is reportedly very keen on a switch to the South Coast this summer. Brighton have a very good reputation of improving young players, like fellow Paraguayan Julio Enciso. It would also be a brilliant opportunity to play under a young manger like Fabian Hürzeler. Last week, his agent Renato Bittar admitted he had been talking to Albion “for a while.”
However, while he looks to prefer a move to Brighton, the Miami side with billionaire owners don’t have to sell. So, they will only let one of their star players leave if their £15m valuation is met.
Inter Miami Manager Gerardo Martino said: “It is more than just interest from Brighton in Diego, and sooner or later this was going to happen. In a year and a half with us he has demonstrated his quality. We’d love to keep him until the end of the year, but we don’t know when he will go. I think that particular Premier League club [Brighton] would be a good place for him.”
GiveMeSport sources suggest that Brighton are closing in on a deal to sign the Paraguay international midfielder, nothing is agreed or done, but talks are reportedly well advanced. The means the Hammers will have to move rapidly if they want to get a deal over the line.
Gomez would be a very interesting move for West Ham, and would fit more into Tim Steidten’s plan of decreasing the average age of the squad, unlike a move for Ngolo Kante. Gomez a powerful central midfielder, and he’d bring some much needed dynamism to our engine room, James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez both have a lack of pace. The 21-year-old possesses real pace, power, athleticism and robustness – four qualities that make him ideally suited to the Premier League.
However, the Hammers should probably target a more defensively sound midfielder. Edson Alvarez is known for missing a lot of games due to suspension, and after Kalvin Phillips and Flynn Downes’ departures West Ham are in need of someone else that is comfortable as a six. Unfortunately, Diego Gomez isn’t that man.
He would still be a very welcome addition to Julen Lopetegui’s side, especially if Lucas Paqueta was to receive a long-term ban. The Uruguayan has scored 3 goals and provided 3 assists in twelve matches in the MLS this campaign. He has missed ten matches this campaign with an ankle injury, but this doesn’t look to be a huge issue as he has suffered just two injuries in his pro career so far.
