West Ham summer signing Wes Foderingham has spoken of achieving his dreams having come from non-league football in his career.
Wes Foderingham’s career has been one filled with many trials and tribulations. As a youngster, the 33 year old keeper looked set to become a Premier League player but was unfortunately released by fellow London club Fulham aged 19.
He went on to sign a deal with Crystal Palace, where he would go on three separate loan spells non league sides in order to gain some experience. A further loan move to Swindon Town, who were managed by Hammers legend Paolo Di Canio at the time, would follow for Foderingham before eventually joining The Robins on a permanent deal.
Foderingham would go on to sign for Scottish giants Rangers in 2015. The 33 year old played regularly for three seasons, helping the Scottish side gain promotion back to the top flight, however, he would eventually lose his place as first choice keeper to Allan McGregor after Steven Gerrard’s appointment as Rangers boss.
The experienced shot stopper would move to his former employers Sheffield United in 2020. He would go on to make over 100 appearances for The Blades, helping them win promotion back to the Premier League in 2023.
Speaking to the clubs Official Website and looking back at his career, Foderingham said: “I’d say I’ve done it the hard way. I grew up in a Premier League Academy but ultimately got released, played in non league, went to Swindon and played in League Two and League One and worked my way up through the pyramid.”
Playing in the Premier League over a decade after being released by Fulham, playing 30 times for Sheffield United, despite ultimately being relegated was still a special achievement for the 33 year old. “Last season was back in the Premier League. So, for me, it was always a dream to play in the Premier League.” said Foderingham.
Discussing his experience in the top flight last season, Foderingham said: “As much as it was a difficult season, ultimately I wanted to play in the Premier League, so it’s one of those things.” Going on to add: “I think I built up my resilience quite early in my career, having come from a club like Rangers where their fan base is very demanding.”
