Billy Horschel, known for sporting a claret and blue golf bag, finished The Open in joint second place at the weekend, a career best finish for the American.
This was the American’s best ever finish, surpassing his joint fourth placed finish at the 2014 US Open and his joint 21st at The Open in 2022. Despite starting the final round a shot clear of the field, Horschel ended with a three under par round of 68 as well as a seven under par four round total of 267.
Horschel certainly went through a wide range of emotions at the weekend, he scored birdies on three of his first six holes only for consecutive bogies seeing him slip back to where he began the day.
By the time Horschel had teed off on the 16th hole his chances of winning were sadly gone, that being said, the 37 year old showcased his ability by finishing the round and his tournament as a whole with three back to back birdies securing his overall finish of joint second place alongside Justin Rose.
Speaking to the media after the tournament, as reported by the Express, Horschel said: “I’m disappointed. I should feel disappointed. I had a chance to win a major. I was in a really good position. I just made too many mistakes today when I didn’t need to.”
The American went on to add: “Fighting until the end is in my DNA. I did a lot of great things that I can take on to the next few years of majors, and hopefully one of these will be my time to step through the door and hold one of them.”
After his best finish at a major championship, all the West Ham family I’m sure would send their warmest congratulations to a fellow supporter in Horschel and wish him the best of luck and every success in upcoming tournaments.”
