Despite reports claiming that West Ham are in a great position to sign a Barcelona midfielder, this may not be the case.

When defining a club legend at West Ham, you think of players that have devoted the majority of their years to the club. Players that revelled in wearing the badge and put everything on the line. However, when trying to define that same thing at a club like Barcelona, it becomes much harder.

With how many world-class players they’ve had spend large chunks of their career at the Nou Camp, purely playing for the club for a long time doesn’t really mean as much. You can argue that you have to be a special player to spend your whole career at a club like that, but when your competition is the likes of Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and Puyol then it’s clear to see that you need to be more then special.

Despite spending all 10 seasons of his career at Barca, Sergi Roberto is more of a cult hero amongst their fans. What he has done consistently is shown up in the big games but his role has been smaller and smaller over the past few seasons.

As he enters the twilight of his career, he could potentially be looking for a move away from his home country and, according to Catalunya radio, West Ham are in pole position to secure his signature. While it’s not a top priority, signing a backup midfielder wouldn’t be the worst idea.

However, our own ExWHUEmployee has provided an update on the situation on The West Ham Way patreon. He reports that while he was offered to us by his agent, the club have decided that he’s not someone they’re looking to consider at this moment in time.

Obviously, his career is remarkable even if he won’t go down as one of the greats of the game. His experience would certainly add a lot to the squad, but he’s not really the type of player our Irons should be looking at signing this Summer.
