Despite nearing a deal for Guido Rodriguez, West Ham could sign yet another midfielder on a free transfer.

West Ham’s interest in Guido Rodriguez seemingly came out of nowhere. One day the links emerged online, the next the midfielder had a medical booked in. Considering that he was desperately wanted by Barcelona, there’s every reason for Hammers to get excited over the potential deal.

Surprisingly though, despite having a good amount of depth in the middle of the park, the Irons could sign another former La Liga midfielder on a free transfer in the coming weeks.

Football Insider reports that the Hammers are keen to add Sergi Roberto to their ranks this Summer due to his experience and versatility.

The Spaniard is something of a cult hero at Barcelona, having risen through their youth ranks to go on to play over 370 times for his boyhood club. Unfortunately, his role at the club has diminished in recent seasons and the 32-year-old has now been let go.

However, it seems unlikely that the East London side would want to sign another midfielder unless one was to leave, which doesn’t seem likely as of right now. He’s old, slow and would cost a substantial amount in wages. If for whatever the Rodriguez move falls through and they haven’t signed another midfielder by the end of the window then a move for Roberto seems more likely. Until then, it just is hard to imagine.
