An out of favour, pacy, English centre-back could be on his way to West Ham before the window closes.

While preseason is largely about fitness and teams adjusting to new signings as well as new tactics. It can also show what some of a side’s strengths are but, more importantly, their weaknesses.

Not that it should be much of a surprise based on last season, but their matches so far have clearly highlighted that Max Kilman has not solved the Hammers’ defensive issues. It looks like West Ham will need to sign another central defender to play alongside him as, to put it bluntly, Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd haven’t been good enough.

Although the likes of Todibo, Tomori and Solet have been heavily linked with filling the gap at the London Stadium, Claret and Hugh claim it could be a once highly rated, Premier League centre-back who they sign.

Joe Gomez was once one of Liverpool and England’s most exciting prospects. He joined the Reds from Charlton back in 2015 and quickly became a key player for them.

Disappointingly, his career has suffered massive setbacks due to repeated injuries and competition from some world-class defenders.

Now 27-years-old he should be in his prime and it would make sense for him to move away from Liverpool to hopefully get back in the England side. What makes him such a usual asset to have is his ability to play anywhere across the back line.

If the Hammers do sign him and do managed to keep him fit, he’d be a great addition to the squad and could really be the other half of the solution to their leaky defence, but they’re two massive ifs.
