West Ham are one of several clubs waiting to hear back from one of last season’s Champions League finalists.
Apart from the club legends like Bobby Moore, Trevor Brooking and Paolo Di Canio, West Ham have had some absolutely world-class players play for them. Unfortunately, the large majority of them played for the Hammers at the end of their career. The likes of Ian Wright, Zabaleta and Suker were actually quite good when they play for the club, but they were old.
While many had hoped that this would be a trend that died out under Tim Steidten, it doesn’t seem to have as reports have claimed that the East London side are keen on signing Mats Hummels.
Although the centre-back is available on a free following an incredible season for Borussia Dortmund, where he was instrumental to his side reaching the Champions League final, he’s 35-years-old and that isn’t the sort of player many fans want to see the club signing.
Despite this, Nico Schira reports that the Hammers are waiting to hear about whether he wants to join the club or not, alongside Bologna and Brighton. He’s already rejected moves to Ajax, Benfica, Lille, AS Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen and two Saudi Arabian sides.
Age aside, he’s still a great defender but there’s no denying that he’s in the final stages of his career. If these links came even 3 or 4 years ago, it would be an opportunity fans would jump at but, at this point, it could be more hassle than it’s worth.
