West Ham could lose all of their first-team centre-backs from last season in a shock twist of events.
Whoever you blame, however you look at it, there’s no beating around the bush that West Ham’s defensive record last season was abysmal.
David Moyes was unable to get the best out of both Mavropanos and Aguerd, while both Ogbonna and Zouma are not capable of playing Premier League football anymore. As a result, the Italian’s time in East has come to an end and it looks like the Frenchman could be joining him too as he edges closer to a move to the Middle East.
Max Kilman and, more recently, Jean-Clair Todibo have been signed as the club’s new starting centre-backs. The pair will have cost the Hammers around £75-80 million (assuming Todibo’s loan is made permanent at the end of the campaign), proving that they’re not messing about this Summer.
According to HITC though, they may need to bring in even more defensive reinforcements as both Aguerd and Mavropanos could also be leaving in the coming weeks. Both would obviously be back up for the new additions so, with no European football this season, their minutes are likely to be limited. The Moroccan has previously stated his displeasure under Moyes and, while things seems to have improved under Lopetegui, he’s unlikely to want to be, potentially, 4th choice.
Fortunately, the Irons are already said to be weighing up whether to move for another centre-back which should mean they have targets already identified.
