West Ham fan favourite Kevin Nolan admits to a massive mistake he and David Moyes made during their time at the club.

Obviously, there was a lot David Moyes got right at West Ham – you don’t get three consecutive seasons of European football as well as a European trophy without being good at your job. For the most part, recruitment was one of those things.

While there were a few disasters like Kalvin Phillips, the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta have been immense. However, it’s perhaps the players Moyes has turned down that are more concerning.

It’s common knowledge at this point that West Ham had the opportunity to sign Julian Alvarez for a miniscule fee while he was still at River Plate. Despite him clearly being good enough for the Premier League as he’s proved at Manchester City, the Scotsman didn’t want him and Kevin Nolan has revealed how he regrets not pushing Moyes to sign him.

“To be fair, we did a lot of work on Alvarez the season he signed,” Nolan stated. “We did a lot of work leading up to it. And one of the first things I said he’s a Man City player right away. Like when obviously the boss said what you think, I just said he’s a Man City player for me because he just looked the part.”

“I think for me he was probably a bit too slight, and what we needed was someone a bit bigger because he was on his own, but he adapted fantastically well. But he was given the opportunity to adapt because of how Man City are and what they do.”

Now that he’s moved to Atletico Madrid for £85 million, the Hammers will be kicking themselves. Not only did they lose out on a brilliant player, but they missed out on a massive payday too.
