A West Ham striker target has been sold elsewhere despite the Hammers offering over double what he was sold for.
It’s been a Summer full of transfer sagas and strange deals across the footballing world. In the modern day, it’s hard to truly judge what is a good value for money deal sometimes.
However, what is an extremely unique situation is that of Samu Omorodion. The Spanish prospect has been linked with a move away from Atletico Madrid to a number of clubs, including West Ham, Aston Villa and Chelsea, with him being extremely close to a move to the latter at one stage.
Both the London clubs were believed to have bid between €35-40 million but neither ended up in them signing the striker. Shockingly though, he’s now signed for Porto for just €15 million, Fabrizio Romano reports.
While on paper it makes no sense from Atletico’s perspective, they actually still own 50% of him with Porto able to buy 15% in 2025 and 2026 for €5 million each. Additionally, there is a 50% sell-on clause and a €100 million release clause.
Dual player ownership is a sticky situation in some countries, particularly England and it’s something West Ham famously had legal issues with when they signed Tevez and Maschereno. For the Spanish side, there is the potential to make a lot more money this way in the long-term, although the club are notorious bad negotiators.
Ultimately any English club who was interested has dodged a bullet by avoiding this deal, the legalities of it would be extremely complicated and for that reason alone it would not be worth touching with a barge pole.
