West Ham could cash in on one of their most vital players from last season despite signing him just a year ago.
Despite a rather lacklustre season, West Ham did excellent business last Summer. Signings like Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez are ones that no one would have even imagined the club making but, despite what some may think, James Ward-Prowse’s impact wasn’t miles away from theirs either.
Particularly during the first-half of the season, the Englishman was absolutely sensational. Across all competitions he managed to contribute to 18 goals, none of which were a goal from a direct free-kick.
Despite him having such a good first campaign in claret and blue, his playing time will be taking a nosedive thanks to a new manager and new signings. As a result, the Hammers may look to sell the midfielder in order to raise funds for further additions this Summer, The Athletic reports.
Guido Rodriguez was a real coup of a signing as he looked set to join Barcelona at one point, and there’s no doubt he will be a vital player under Julen Lopetegui. Edson Alvarez is obviously one of the first names on the team sheet, and it seems like the Spaniard is quite fond of Tomas Soucek. much like his predecessor. With the rumours that West Ham could also bring in Carlos Soler before the window closes, it’s hard to see where Ward-Prowse gets any minutes.
On paper, the former Southampton captain should fit Lopetegui’s possession-based system perfectly, but he hasn’t been given an opportunity to prove himself as of yet. Although it’s unlikely the club will be actively looking to sell him, if the right offer does come in then we may well have seen the last of Ward-Prowse at West Ham.
