West Ham United could take advantage of an extremely busy period for Liverpool as they take on the Reds in Round 3 of the Carabao Cup at Anfield on September 25th.
Hammers fans were very disappointed with the draw, with many again pointing out how unlucky we get in the competition almost every year, however, it could end up being a positive for Julen Lopetegui’s side. The East Londoners travel up to Liverpool at a very good time due to their fixture congestion.
Arne Slot’s side face five matches in just fifteen days after the current international break, they face Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Wolves in the Premier League as well as AC Milan in the Champions League and obviously West Ham in the Carabao Cup.
It is very likely that Arne Slot could rotate which could see the likes of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk benched against the Hammers. However, it could also see players like Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Harvey Elliott and Conor Bradley play from the start. These players are yet to start s competitive game under the new manager so they will be keen to show the former Feyenoord and AZ what they can offer.
The Hammers don’t have any European football this year so can put a lot more focus on the cup competitions, we face Chelsea at home and Brentford away either side of the Liverpool match. We can also afford to rotate a few players now with the new additions that have been brought in this summer. We can bring in Crysencio Summerville who has scored at Anfield in the past, Niclas Fullkrug and deadline day addition Carlos Soler into the starting eleven if we require fresh legs.
It could be a very exciting match at Anfield, with both sets of fans happy with the start of their campaigns, Liverpool have picked up points in very winnable matches, while the Hammers have only won two and lost two, they did impress during the defeats to Aston Villa and Manchester City. West Ham fans will be hoping for a run in the competition to make up for the lack of European football this campaign.
