Two Millwall supporters are set to embark on a walk around Bermondsey wearing West Ham kits in support of a young Hammers Academy goalkeeper.
Millwall fans Bill Slack and Nick Hart will walk from the Den to the London Stadium in support of 14 year old Oscar Fairs who joined the Hammers academy as a goalkeeper at the age of 9.
Oscar was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour around a year ago. The GoFundMe page set up to help raise money for the young Hammers keeper explains how Oscar has been through 7 procedures as well as a round of chemo and a round of radiotherapy since his cancer diagnosis. He and his family have been informed that he may sadly only have a few months left.
The 14 year old’s family have discovered a groundbreaking treatment that could help save his life, the nearest place he would be able to get the treatment done is in France and it would cost around £100,000. The young goalkeeper has recieved a massive outpouring of love and support from across the football community, his GoFundMe page received a donation of £10,000 from Hammers chairman David Sullivan as well as a £5,000 donation from current Arsenal midfielder and former West Ham captain Declan Rice.
At the time of writing (3rd of September) Oscar’s GoFundMe page is currently sat on just over £117,000. After hearing of Oscar’s story online, lifelong Millwall fan Bill felt he could do something to help the 14 year old.
It is not the first occasion that Millwall fans Bill and Nick have put the deep rooted rivalry aside for a good cause. In 2018 they raised over £27,000 for West Ham fan Isla Caton, who was fighting neuroblastoma. Young Isla lost her battle against cancer in 2022, since her passing hundreds of thousands of pounds have been raised in her memory to help other young children bravely fighting against the disease.
Speaking to Southwark News Bill said: “Last time it just helped raise so much awareness and publicity, we thought we could do it again for him. Wearing a West Ham shirt is a big decision for any Millwall supporter. For a cause like this, it’s well worth it.”
Bill and Nick’s walk in support of young Oscar is set to take place on the 14th of October. The Millwall supporters chose a weekend during the international break so that as many supporters from both sides of the rivalry could get involved.
If any Hammers fans reading this would like to send a donation to young Oscar his GoFundMe page is linked further above in this piece.
