Jarrod Bowen has admitted to being slightly disappointed with his lack of playing time at the Euros, but he cherishes the chances he did have.

West Ham’s best bit of business in the modern era is undoubtedly signing Jarrod Bowen from Hull. The winger has gone on to develop himself into a world-class player which any team would be lucky to have at their disposal. Not only is he a brilliant player, but he’s an equally excellent person as well as representative for the club.

Despite being involved in a ridiculous 30 goals for the Hammers last season, he was hardly used by Gareth Southgate at the Euros. While he is understandably frustrated with how little opportunities he got, he’s also deeply proud to have represented his country at a major tournament.

“If I sat here and said I was happy not playing [I would be lying], every player wants to play every minute,” he told Standard Sport. “But those minutes I did play, I’ll always hold them with me. It’s something no one can take away from me, playing at a major tournament for my country. I don’t see it as a negative. I see it as a really good experience I learned a lot from.”

One of the big things surrounding the competition was how much pressure is put on England’s players and how that spills over into abuse, there was even an ad campaign to Joy Division’s song Love Will Tear Us Apart Again around the matter. Although he clearly saw some of the criticism, Bowen claims that it didn’t really affect him. “You can’t speak for everyone. Everyone would react in a different way if they read something [negative],” the winger explained. “Us players don’t live under rocks, people are on social media.”

“But, for me, the camp was full of positivity. The outside noise affects you as much as you want it to affect you.”

“Looking back, being involved was really special. It was a really, really top group. Obviously we wanted to win it, but being part of it has stood me in really good stead. I see the summer as a real positive.”

His strong start to the new season meant he was once again called up to the England squad. He stated that he has no intention of behaving any different despite the new manager at both club and international level. “I would never want to take my feet off the gas, I always want to impress and do more.”
