West Ham fans will be infuriated reading this stat about two of their top Summer targets.
An immense Summer transfer window has been met by West Ham with a lacklustre start to the 2024/25 season. Their 4-1 triumph over Ipswich was their second league win of the campaign.
Despite scoring in all but 1 of their matches, it’s evident that the Hammers are still lacking an out and out striker. Michail Antonio may chip in with the occasional sensational performance (as he did today), he is not able to do it every week.
West Ham’s solution to their forward woes was meant to be Niclas Fullkrug. The German has scored for fun in his home country for most of his career, but he’s spent more time out injured than he has been available since moving to East London.
Inevitably, this has left fans wishing they signed one of their other, younger targets to fill the No.9 role and, frustratingly, two of their once favoured options are now ripping it up.
Everyone knows how well Jhon Duran has done this season, he’s been the ultimate super sub, with his goal against Bayern Munich in particular capturing headlines. What some might not have realised though is that he has the best goal per 90’ ratio in the whole of Europe, beating someone like Erling Haaland. The Colombian is averaging an immense 1.78 goals per 90’. In second place is Samu Omorodion, another player the Irons held firm interest in, with 1.57.
Knowing that our Irons could have had either one of them leading the line is absolutely infuriating. It was so close to being a perfect window, but signing the right striker was the most important thing. Fullkrug could still go on and prove that he’s the right man for the job but, for now, you can’t help but wonder what could have been.
