West Ham youngsters Kaelan Casey and George Earthy were both starters for the England Elite Squad, formerly known as England U20’s, 2-1 win against Italy in the U20 Elite League.
The comeback victory sees England go top of the eight nation league having picked up seven points from their three games. The young Lions remaining top is dependant on the result of Germany’s game against Poland.
England’s Elite Squad or England U20’s are currently coached by former West Ham coaches Paul Nevin and Kevin Nolan. Nevin and Nolan named both Casey and Earthy as part of their starting eleven. Casey made his third start for the Elite Squad and fellow Hammers youngster Earthy, who is currently out on loan at Championship side Bristol City, earning his second start.
Casey played alongside Ashley Phillips, currently on loan at Stoke City from Spurs, in the heart of defence. England did well to limit Italy’s chances, however Italy would take the lead towards the end of the first half. Tommaso Ebone headed home a cross from Simone Pafundi to put Italy in front.
England would begin to gain control of the game in the second half. Having joy out wide on the flanks meant Earthy saw a lot of the ball and was heavily involved. The Elite Squad’s equaliser would come just before the hour mark thanks to a long range strike from Plymouth Argyle’s Darko Gyabi. Soon after, Casey and England keeper Tommy Simkin would combine well to prevent Italy from going back in front, Casey did well to clear the ball away and to safety after Simkin’s initial save.
After creating some space in the box, Earthy went close to giving England the lead. His effort was saved by Italy keeper Torriani and this would be Earthy’s last contribution to the match before being substituted.
The young Lions were rewarded for their patience as they scored a stoppage time winner to seal their comeback win. Dominic Ballard squared the ball across to fellow substitute Max Dean who fired home to secure the win for England on his debut.
Hammers youngsters Casey and Earthy return to action on Monday when England face Czechia in their next U20 Elite League match.
