West Ham United are currently projected to finish 11th in the Premier League table this season after a very average start to the campaign, according to Opta’s supercomputer.
The Hammers currently sit twelfth in the Premier League with eight points, one place above what Opta’s supercomputer expects the Hammers to be. The supercomputer is based on expected goal scored (xGF), expected goals against (xGA) and expected points (xPTS). The supercomputer believes the Hammers should be sitting in 13th place, so this shows the Hammers are picking up as many points as their performances suggest.
This is different to a side like Arsenal for example, they currently sit 3rd in the table, but the supercomputer suggests they should be in 8th place. The Gunners have less expected points than the likes of Fulham and Bournemouth which will come as a surprise to many.
However, more interestingly, Opta have also used the supercomputer to predict the final Premier League table. Disappointingly Hammers are predicted to finish 11th place in the 24/25 season as things stand. It says we’re currently forecasting a total of 48.44 points, which is bang on our average points total from all 26 of our 28 game Premier League seasons. 11th is also our average Premier League finish, so it could be a bog standard season for the Hammers unless Julen Lopetegui can turn a corner.
As things stand, it’s suggesting we have a 1.43% chance of qualifying for the Europa League via our league position, and 0.47% chance of finishing in the top four. The supercomputer believes we are more likely to be relegated than qualify for the Europa League with a 1.56% chance of Lopetegui’s side facing the drop.
The supercomputer does have some good news for Hammers fans however, Tottenham Hotspur are expected to finish outside of the Europa League places, while Manchester City are expected to pip Arsenal to the Premier League title once again.
It suggests that Manchester United look set to finish ninth, which would be their lowest finish in Premier League history. Wolves, Southampton and Ipswich are predicted to drop down to the Championship with Everton supposedly set to survive relegation once again.
