West Ham are “prepared to act” in the event that Lucas Paqueta receives a lifelong ban.

Despite his awful form this season, Lucas Paqueta is still a pivotal player for West Ham. He has the ability to win games all by himself, being able to just switch it on at any moment, and that’s probably why he’s not been dropped. If any other player was performing as bad as he has been for as long as he has then they would’ve been benched a long time ago.

However, there’s an argument to be had that none of this is his fault, that he is only performing this way due to the stress of the betting scandal looming over him. If found guilty of purposely receiving yellow cards, then he could be banned for life.

While no one knows what evidence both sides have, it would be foolish of West Ham not to prepare for the eventuality of him getting banned. Fortunately, the club’s former scout Mick Brown claims they’re doing just that. “From what I’m told, they’re already looking for replacements,” he explained to Football Insider.

“They’ll be drawing up a list of options in case he does get banned. They won’t want to panic and jump into paying a big fee for someone out of desperation.”

“Ever since the charges were first brought against him they would’ve known he could face a ban. Now that the FA have apparently threatened him with this lifetime ban, which would be a worst-case scenario, they’ll need to be prepared.”

“If they weren’t already looking at potential replacements, I’d be worried given how important he is. But they’ll be obviously keeping an eye on the situation and will be prepared to act in the transfer market if worse comes to worse.”
