A West Ham star fulfilled his promise to teammate during their 2-1 over Manchester United.
Even David Moyes’ biggest fans would have to admit he was rather stubborn. He’s an old school manager who believed in his ways and wouldn’t change that for anyone.
However, while the results have been great, Julen Lopetegui has been more than happy to admit when he’s made mistakes and it’s that willingness to change things when they’re going wrong which led to the Hammers’ 2-1 win over Manchester United.
The Spaniard made a triple substitution at half-time which saw Soucek, Todibo, and Summerville come on. While they were all excellent in their own right, the standout was clearly the latter of the three who caused untold problems for United’s defence.
Summerville admits he’s had to be extremely patient to get his opportunity, but he’s taken it by scoring the first goal of the game, and the first goal of his West Ham career.
He dedicated his goal to Mohammed Kudus, who he revealed he made a promise to ahead of the game. “I told Mo that when I came on I was going to score, and that I was going to celebrate with him!” said Summerville. “I like Mo a lot – I look up to him on and off the pitch, and the emotions all just came out.”
“I’m very happy with the goal. You always have to be alert in the box, I was switched on and I was happy to see the ball fall to my feet.”
“I’ve had to be patient at times so far this season, but when I come on I just try to give energy to the team. I think that’s why West Ham wanted me in the summer, and I think I managed to bring some joy to the stadium today.”
The winger had to give Lopetegui something to think about, and he certainly did that. However, he seemed more concerned with how the team was doing as a whole than his individual achievement. “We all just need to stick together, and keep building. We’re in it all together, and although we haven’t always got the results we’ve wanted we’ve kept going.”
“I think the group is fantastic, and we all want to play for each other. We’re all happy with this result, and we’ll do our best to get another good result next weekend.”
