West Ham have officially signed young attacker David Chigwada to a professional contract.
With his family by his side, Chigwada signed his first professional contract for West Ham after signing a scholarship deal in the summer.
Chigwada grew up just outside of Manchester and played football at Blackburn Rovers’ academy and then at Manchester City before catching the eyes of West Ham academy scouts playing for the City U16s. The Hammers Academy offered him a contract to continue his growth and upward trajectory at East London’s Chadwell Heath.
Chigwada’s hard work has paid off, and his first professional contract is a proud moment for him and his family.
“There have been a lot of sacrifices to get here, moving away from friends, but it’s great to see that paying off. Being valued by the Club makes it all worth it,” he told the clubs Official Website.
“I feel like I’m adjusting well to my new environment. Being offered a scholarship at West Ham was very exciting. The style of play is very unique. The fanbase is very good as well. I’m really looking forward to the next two years.”
The new Hammers forward is currently part of the U18s under Lauris Coggin. A team that Chigwada wants to positively impact going forward.
“I just want to be of value to the team, help them in whatever way the coach thinks is best. Showcase what I can do and what I can bring to the table.”
West Ham academy manager Kenny Brown believes the under-18’s is the best place for Chigwada at this point.
“He’s learning a lot under Lauris and the coaching staff and knows he has to be patient. It’s still early in his time with us but he’s a real prospect and we’re all looking forward to working with him, helping him develop and see where we can get him to.”
