Former West Ham managerial target Ruben Amorim has made a ridiculous claim about his meeting with David Sullivan.
It’s only natural for people to cover their tracks to make themselves look better. However, there’s a line between making your situation better and telling blatant lies.
As a manager, the only reason you’d cancel two days of training and fly to a different country to meet the owner of another club is to discuss a move, and it would be ludicrous to claim otherwise. Bizarrely though, Ruben Amorim has done just that.
“I went to England but I didn’t go to negotiate, only to meet the owner. I had made my decision [to stay at Sporting]. If you think I wanted to leave last year, there’s nothing I can do about it.”
The Portuguese manager has recently been appointed as Manchester United’s head coach, and he is clearly just trying to impress their fans.
Ultimately, it’s safe to assume that one of the main reasons he didn’t join the Hammers is due to money, The board aren’t ones to pay for compensation, but they obviously wanted to see if something could be agreed.
Whether or not they made the right choice to avoid Ruben Amorim’s fees remains to be seen, but West Ham fans are kicking themselves at the moment – especially considering who they ended up with instead.
